I like both movies but I certainly agree, I've always thought Sparkle was more realistic and grittyAdriennehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07315223366240901207noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9019110752663101206.post-12284774998550742252012-07-21T16:19:43.751-04:002012-07-21T16:19:43.751-04:00In reference to my FB post, I had a joke fly throu...In reference to my FB post, I had a joke fly through my head so I had a type it. In all seriousness, Dreamgirls is more cosmetic and fantasy filled. Its a potrayal of the road to stardom and the flashy, excited, and dramatic dream that all singers look up into the corners of their eyes and live. Sparkle is an important piece of the "Dream" puzzle. Stars are in their eyes with fame n fortune in their horizon, but all families, especially black families, stick together with or without the stardom. The ups and down that come with money and celebrity are disguises for the devil's iniquity. But a tight knit family rides the rollercaster and sticks together while still pursuing the dream. Long story-short, I equate "Dreamgirls" to a thin crust supreme pizza, while "Sparkle" is a well made/homemade chicken pot pie. Alot more substance.Chip Young (Cousin)noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9019110752663101206.post-28712224986075101532012-07-21T13:38:58.770-04:002012-07-21T13:38:58.770-04:00For me, after seeing Sparkle a few months back and...For me, after seeing Sparkle a few months back and Dreamgirls about 5 times, I can definitely say Sparkle seems more realistic than Dreamgirls.

Dreamgirls looks to me how Diana would portray The Supremes story and Sparkle would be a more realistic take since it has the drugs, the boys and all the drama no one would really want to talk about.

Between the two, though their base is the same, Dreamgirls (the movie anyway) didn't strongly focus, for me, the family aspect of things. Though they were friends, as soon as money got involved and Effie started to be more vocal, she got cut off and everything became about business it seems.

Sparkle, which I should probably watch again to make a full argument, seemed to always be more rooted in the family dynamic than it was the fame. Though the boys and other outside influences appeared, the heart of the movie was about these sisters trying to make it big.

Personally, I enjoyed Sparkle more than Dreamgirls. Dreamgirls may have been based on The Supremes, but with a bit of editing you could definitely made it been about Destiny's Child if you really wanted to.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12311930791468263299noreply@blogger.com
